Church History
Fellowship Baptist Church traces its roots to early Baptist congregations along the Obey River as far back as 1808, with influential leaders like William D. Sewell shaping the spiritual life of the region for decades. After the Civil War left the community rebuilding from hardship, local men Thomas Howard and Wesley Roberts invited William S. Guthrie to organize a new church in 1872, meeting first in a small workshop near present‑day Willow Grove Road. Seventeen charter members helped establish the congregation, and a log building soon stood on land donated by the Howard family. Over the years, Fellowship became known for traditions like “May Meeting Day,” when crowds gathered from near and far. As the church grew, new buildings and additions were constructed in 1919, 1950, 1975, 1987, 2000, and 2004, reflecting the congregation’s expanding ministries and commitment to serving families. Most recently, after storm damage in 2025, the Family Life Center was fully renovated, continuing the legacy of resilience, generosity, and faith that has defined Fellowship Baptist Church for more than 150 years.
What We Believe
We believe in the authority of God’s Word, the triune nature of God, humanity’s need for redemption through Jesus Christ, and God’s design for the family as a gift and foundation for faithful living.
God
There is only one true God. He is living, personal, perfect, and infinite. God is the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with distinct personal attributes who are co-existent and co-equal.
God the Father
Reigns with care over His creation, is Father to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, and works human history to the purposes of His grace. (Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 64:8, John 14:6-7)
God the Son
Jesus Christ is eternally God and was present in the beginning, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary death on a cross for sinners, and was raised to life to ascend to heaven and sit at the right hand of God. (John 1:1-5, Acts 2:22-24, Ephesians 1:20)
God the Holy Spirit
Illuminates the Scriptures, convicts of sin, regenerates believers, bestows spiritual gifts, and empowers believers to godly living and service. (Luke 11:13, John 14:16-17, Romans 8:9-11)
Glorification
The final perfected state of believers in eternity, in which they will be like Christ. (Romans 8:30, Philippians 3: 20-21)
The Family
The family is the foundational institution of human society. God has ordained marriage as a lifelong covenant relationship between one man and one woman. Marriage is a reflection of the union between Christ and His church. From the moment of conception, children are a blessing and a heritage from the Lord. Parents are to model God’s pattern for marriage and teach them spiritual and moral values. (Genesis 2:19-24, Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, 1 Corinthians 7:7-9, Ephesians 5:21-33)
The Scriptures
The Holy Bible is the inerrant, trustworthy, divinely inspired Word of God, full of instruction for righteous living and the source of absolute truth. It was written by human authors, who were directed by God to write His divine revelation, centered on Jesus Christ. (John 17:17, Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:15-17)
Man
Man was created in the image of God. He created two genders: male and female, and these two genders were part of the goodness of creation. After the first sin of the original man, all of humanity have inherited a sinful nature and are therefore separated from God. Man is condemned apart from the grace of God and can find redemption only in Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:26-30, Romans 3:23, Romans 5:6)
Salvation
Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. It includes:
Regeneration – Brought about by the Holy Spirit to bring new birth to a sinner and make him alive to God. This involves a sinner’s repentance and faith.
Repentance is turning away from sin and turning toward God. Faith is believing in Jesus Christ for salvation and committing one’s life to Him as Lord and Savior. (Matthew 4:17, Matthew 16:24, John 1:12)
Sanctification – Growing more like Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within a believer. (Romans 6:22, Romans 8:5)
Justification
God counting a sinner righteous because of the work of Jesus Christ. (John 1:12-13, Romans 2:23-24)
